Audience Research

Who are the target audience?
My target audience for the Digipack is an age range from 18-30 years which include male and female. The target audience will be in many different occupations such as teachers to media enthusiasts, I range this very wide due to the  amount of people how can relate to the music do to it having a bit of everything include such as political situation and relationship problems.

‘Got no money in my pocket, when I’m goin’ out, I’m feeling disconnected and my cards have been rejected’

The audience would like to be provided a platform for live music. They like to be informed about the news, interesting documentaries and different advice relevance to young adults. The target audience are big fans of popular music; they are media savvy people and are on trend with what is happen with music. They live on their mobile phone and life is just a text, tweet or status update away.

The music that they would be interested in would include music from a good classic band/artist such as the Gorillaz, Helpless Blues and Flobots, video boy album will fit well with this music brackets and target audience due to the similarity of the lyrics with the backing music.

This shows that the two artist have similar fans and target audience, I know this due to it appearing on Amazon as frequently bought together making Amazon produce a special deal.
The type of TV the target audience appreciates is shown on the Channel 4 website, this page shows how they are interested in The Simpsons and The Big Bang Theory. I know this because of the sistisics of the age range of 16-34, a range similar to the one which is put on the Video Boy album.

The target audience would also be interest in buying items from the apple store; their target audience is also similar to the Video Boy by it being that the main percentage of the iPhones sold is bought by 15-34 year olds similar to the music audience.
Concerning the films which would interest the target audience would be films such as The Pirates of the Caribbean 4, which is recommended by The Vue over 18 screenings provided by the cinema. The cinema offers this deal to give adults showings of great films for in a more grown up environment, to enjoy the peace and quiet of an adult only audience.
The website also shows a countdown of the Radio 1 big weekend; this shows the connection of the target audience I have been looking into.

What expectations do they have of the Digipack?
The target audience expects creativity and inspirational artwork on their digipacks, this is due to the way of design that is shown on the albums such as the Flobots which is very popular with the target audience which will be interested in buying the album like Video boy.

Album Information

Name of Artist: Lexi
I chose the name Lexi for the artist of the album, this is because of its strength as a women’s name. I believe the name connotes a feeling of the artist being different by the unusual use of the name and independence of it; this is due to the artist being able to stand with just one name which shows her belief in being a success. The trend of only having one name follows from successful artist such as Madonna and BeyoncĂ©, this is a big highlight to the audience due to having an artist with one name shows the connection with the amazing music of the other one named artists. This helps the recognition of the singer rise due to the public wanting to find out her style of music due to her name standing out from the other artists.
Name of Album: The Manhunt
I choose this name album title as I believed this will keep my options open for the type of cover I can create. ‘Manhunt’ suggests that the artist has passion to find the right man for her; this is what I want to create in my album as I believe this feeling is relatable to the target audience. This is a very popular theme in young female singers and their demand to be strong role models is reflected in their music. The music documents the artist story of their life following them through the battle of keeping relationships and following their continuous dream. This is a selling point with the younger generation as they look for role models and advice through music to help them build a better way of life.
Name of Songs:
1.      Manhunt
2.      Find it
3.      A Million Miles
4.      Heaven
5.      Like you
6.      Almost Love
7.      Killer Love

Artwork idea
Including a battle theme, this will help connect the ‘manhunt’ theme and the look of the singer together. A collage effect on the cover will help me keep the option open to build on the meaning of the songs, creating layering on the album.

Album Cover Image

Bruno Mars – Doo-Wops and Hooligans

I like this album cover for many reasons, mainly due to the fact it is not the typical photo shoot cover. This helps bring out the personality of the singer showing how he is old school, highlighting the meaningful songs the album holds. The album cover in made by screen printing, this creates a vibe of the artist being creative which rubes of in his music. This is because the cover shows the artist going on a journey, walking down the path of memories which will be inside the album.

Coldplay – Viva La Vida
I love the historical style of this album cover from Coldplay; this is because of the experimental behaviour and the meaning behind the cover artwork. The style of the picture is hand painted; this is continued through to the rough painted graffiti as the writing, this adds depth and texture into the cover. The painting on the cover it a story teller, this is because of it showing a victory in an old battle, this is a big statement due the way the women is stood in the middle holding the French flag. This brings across the message of the album, this is because it shows the audience a conclusion from the famous band showing them a victory of their previous career.

Experimental Album Design

I created this album cover to experiment with the different tool and techniques you need to use to make a Digipack cover. I found the image, title and name of band using a game which involves you using Wikipedia to start a random search to find these elements to create a cover. I found this very helpful to get me ready to create a Digipack as it made me think of different ways I can use these random elements and put them together to create a product which fitted together.

Legal Requirements for Digipacks

The cover became an important part of the culture of music at the time. As a marketing tool and an expression of artistic intent, gatefold covers and inserts, often with lyric sheets, made the album cover a desirable artifact in its own right. The move to the small CD format lost that impact, though attempts have been made to create a more desirable packaging for the CD. The album cover is a component of the overall packaging of an album. A variety of treatments could be applied to improve both their appearance and durability, such as clear plastic wrap, this helps protect the case from scratches.

According to the rules of the UK Charts, an album either it has more than four tracks or lasts more than 25 minutes, shorter albums are referred to as mini-albums. This decision is made if an album becomes too long to fit a single vinyl record or CD, a recording artist may make the decision to release a double album where compact discs are packaged together in a single case.

Trade mark laws state that you must have the album name and the artist name written clearly on the front cover of the artwork, this is to help the audience recognize the type of music it is which helps them determine if they are going to purchase the music. With naming your album, you can use any phase or word, but it has to be written in a way that your audience can understand. Concerning the picture of the album the artist can use any image which is not under any copyright, unless you have permission from the owner. If the designer wants the album cover to contain an image of a person, you must have permission form that person or you can’t use the image.

The information that is included in or on the album is also restricted. The information has to meet a basic standard of including, bands name, song length, total play length, songwriters name and music publisher. You also have to include the BMI or ASCAP name with their logo and address of record label, mail order, website address, email address and credits for producer. With that you have to write the name of the engineers, musicians, art director, and photographer, recording studio, mastering and manufacture. Including all of this information you also have to include the trade mark, compact disc logo and catalog number to keep track of the sales.
