Final Character - Newspaper Boy

This is my final idea for the video boy character; I developed on my third idea which included using newspaper to explain the type of character which the musician is and what he talks about in his music. I took time to look through the different newspapers to find articles and pictures which means something to the artist, this way I could improve on my character before as this final version has more meaning. I carried on with the same steps as I completed with the third idea, I made sure that when I was on my last step of adding the detail on the body that I took time to make sure that what I drew on clothing and all included features which helped the audience understand the type of character which the artist reflects in his music. I believe with this connection between the music and the character helps make the audience feel that they understand the meaning of music the artist plays; this will increase the sale of music and the popularity of artist.

Researching Collage Effects - Creating People

John Lennon

This collage of John Lennon was created by ripping sections of newspaper out and sticking it randomly to a sheet of paper, they carried on creating this by painting on the newspaper using shades of black and grey to gradually create an image of the iconic band member of the Beetles.

I believe this is a very successful example of a good piece of collage because of the number of different textures it uses; the techniques used connotes an image of the artist being torn by his fame due to the ripping effect of the newspaper. The shade used in the piece of work creates more of an understanding of the artist as the audience feels how he is a traditional and powerful person. The image gives this across because of the way the musician has his head helped high and how the black and white affect give across a feeling of it being in the past.

President Barack Obama

The collage of president Obama is using a completely different technique as the one used in the collage of John Lennon. This person completed this collage by firstly drawing a outline of Obama including the features of his face and upper body, after this the person found lots of different pages from magazines, newspapers and posters to rearrange them to fit the shape of the image which is president Obama.

I believe this is another very successful collage of a very influential person, it shows his power and capability to adjust too many different views of people. This is because of the way the picture is viewed by looking up at the president showing the power of him being uncharged of America, the other side of him being in touch with his people as the collage shows different articles and pictures which make up the portrait as this show a great range of workability.

My Final Idea

I think I can use this techniques and styles in my final idea of creating a character out of a newspaper collage; I intended to use the same aim of using the newspaper to my advantage and make sure I can create an image of personality out of the character I create.

My idea to create a person shaped character out of newspaper; I intend to use paint or the computer to add personality to it by adding a face and clothing. This collage might turn out slightly differently as i might add more texture to it such as fabric to make come to life.

Printing Tecniques

To discover different ways of printing techniques we went into an art room to play with different types of etching. The first techniques involved getting a glass base and rolling ink on it; you put a piece of paper on top of it and drew on your design, if you wished you could add a few different colour layers to complete the work. The second technique was based around scratching you design onto a piece of plastic with a metal screw, after this you rubbed the ink into the scratches then wipe the remaining ink off. To get the design onto the piece of paper you needed to wet the paper and then put the plastic ink side up which the paper and cloth on top of it, then to complete the printing technique you need to put it into a roller.

First Design
VIDEO BOY LETTERS



In this design I decided to do this because I thought I could included the letters on the Digi pack cover. The detailing in the letters V and B try to reflect the personality of the artist and what he talks about in his songs, the two pictures included city buildings, different words, symbols and video representations. I did this to help me understand what I could do on my front cover to make it even more interesting, but in the end I believe it would be too much to have this design and the detailed character together on the same page, so this idea will not work in the final product.

Second Design
A CARTOON CHARACTER

In this design I was trying to think of other ways I could make the Video Boy character, I traced this image of a cartoon character to get an image of what this design could look like. In the end the character did not turn out as well as I thought, this is due to the way of the etching being hard to control which made the final design look very out of control. The other down side of this technique is it is hard to see what your design looks like on the plastic, I discovered that some details were off the main line as I could not see the centre of the character. I will not use this printing technique in my final character as I will stick to the newspaper collage; I feel it works better for me and the outcome effect of the character.

In conclusion the questionnaire revelled that the character which my peers preferred was the Newspaper Boy Character with 10 votes. The comments I received back were that this character was inventive and a good base to expand on and create more of a personality for him using meaningful newspaper headlines.

This character I created was trying to combine my first idea with my second idea, I did this by including the limp shape of character two and the detailing on the body which was of the same lines as the conservative man in character one. I made this character by cutting the shape from a magazine; I continued this by getting a piece of paper and filling it with ripped newspaper. I continued making this character by cutting the paper into the chosen shape; I took a picture of this to edit it on the computer by adding detailing on the body and by deleting the background. I made this character because of the way the newspaper represents the news and problem in the world which the singer talks about in his songs, the added computer detailing connotes the way he is young and is a true character due to the way he can bring life to anything including newspaper.
